TWO ANCIENT KENT CHURCHES WITH ‘LOST VILLAGES’ TO OPEN.

Join us and Paddlesworth Church on Sunday 18th August between 12-3pm as two of Kent’s most ancient churches that share a tragic history will be open to the public.

As a result of the Black Death in 1349 the little Norman church of Dode situated on the North Downs above the river Medway was abandoned and its priest sent to the neighbouring church of St. Benedict in the valley below.

Thus began a series of administrative changes that, even now, affect peoples lives.  Remarkably, despite the lack of a congregation for centuries both churches proudly stand over the site of their former villages today.

Now often referred to as ‘sister churches’ they will be open between 12noon and 3pm when the story of their survival & relationship over almost a thousand years will be explained & illustrated.

Both churches are listed as being of Architectural and Historic Interest (grade 11*).

Entry is free to both buildings although donations are welcomed

St. Benedict’s is vested in the Churches Conservation Trust and all donations made (at either church) will go towards its upkeep.
